Sampling Flashcards
What is opportunity sampling?
Participants happen to be available at the time of the study
Strengths of opportunity sampling
- Time saving
- Less costly
Limitations of opportunity sampling
- Not representative of the whole population
- Researcher bias
What is random sampling?
All members of the population have equal chance of being selected
What is systematic sampling?
Predetermined system where every nth member is selected
What is stratified sampling?
Identify strata (subgroup) and then take random sample from each strata
What is volunteer sampling?
Involves self selection where participant offers to take part
Strengths of random sampling
- No researcher bias
Limitations of random sampling
- Time consuming
- Volunteer bias (can refuse participation)
Strengths of systematic sampling
- Avoids researcher bias
- Usually fairly representative
Limitations of systematic sampling
- Not truly unbiased unless you use a generator and then use systematic
Strengths of stratified sampling
- No researcher bias
- Produces representative data
Strengths of volunteer sampling
- Not time consuming as quick access to willing participants
Limitations of stratified sampling
- Time consuming to identify strata and then contact people
- Cannot have complete representation
Limitations of volunteer sampling
- Volunteer bias as they may attract a particular profile which may affect generalisation
