Sampling Flashcards
What are the 6 types of sampling
- Random
- Stratified
- Snowball
- Systematic
- Quota
- Opportunity
Random
Picking out names out a hat
+ everyone in population chance of getting chosen
+ Easy to create
+ can be generated by a computer
- can be unrepresentative sample
Stratified
Sample reflects proportions of different groups
50% male then 50% of sample should be male
+Provides representative sample
- Can be complicated to create the sample
Snowball
Find a few participants and ask them to find participants themselves and so on
+ useful when researching hard to access groups
- sample can be unrepresentative
Systematic
Picking nth person from all possible participants
N= no. of participants/ no. needed for sample
+ relatively easy to create
- can lead to unrepresentative sample
Quota
Sample needs to fit with certain quotas e.g 30/90 need to be unemployed
+ representative sample
- can be difficult to find enough ppl to fill quota
Opportunity
Uses ppl from target audience available at time
Based on convenience
+ quick and easy
- can lead to unrepresentative sample
