Sampling Flashcards
What is the population?
The whole set of items that are of intrest
What is a sample?
A selection of observations taken
What is a census?
observes of measures every member of a population
A: accurate
D: expensive, time consuming
What is simple random sampling?
Chosen from random - everyone has equal chance
(everyone’s number put in a box, x amount taken out)
A: free of bias, easy, cheap, equal chance
D: sampling frame needed, not suitable for large population
What is opportunity sampling?
choosing individuals as opportunity arises (off the street)
A: easy, quick
D: bias
What is systematic sampling?
a sampling technique with a systematic method (every 10th person)
A: simple, quick, suitable for large populations
D: sampling frame needed, bias introduce
What is stratified sampling?
divide into subgroups
A: accurate reflection, guarantees representation
D: clearly classified, each section suffers from same D as simple random
