Q

Positive test for Sulfate SO42-

A
  1. Add hydrochloric acid, look for effervescence
  2. If there’s no effervescence add barium chloride solution
  3. If SO42- ions are present, a white precipitate forms (BaSO4)

17
Q

Is the salt soluble: yes

Does it contain Na+ K+ NH4+: yes

18
Q

Is the salt soluble: yes

Does it contain Na+ K+ NH4+: No

A

Insoluble base + acid (neutralisation)

19
Q

Is the salt soluble: no

A

Precipitation

20
Q

Precipitation to make an insoluble salt

A
Mix solutions
Stir
Filter
Rinse with distilled water
Dry with filter paper
21
Q

Insoluble base neutralisation: between acid and insoluble base to make soluble salt

A

Add base to hot acid
Keep adding solid until the first specs do not disappear
Filter off excess solid, keeping the filtrate (salt solution)

22
Q

Titration (neutralisation between acid and alkali to make soluble salt)

A

Use a volumetric pipettes to put 25cm alkali into flask
Are a few drops of indicator
Fill burette with acid
Add acid to alkali swirling all the time
Stop when indicator changes colour
Record initial and final burette volumes
Repeat experiment to get concordant results
Repeat again without indicator to run through exact amount

23
Q

Crystallising salts

A

Heat salt solution to boil off water (makes solution saturated)
Leave solution to cool and evaporate
Filter off and dry crystals with filter paper

24
Q

Test for Cu2+ Fe2+ Fe3+

A

Dissolve sample in water
Add a few drops NaOH (aq) sodium hydroxide

Copper 2+ blue
Iron 2+ green
Iron 3+ brown
