Salts and Empirical Formula Flashcards
What is a salt?
A salt is any compound formed by the neutralisation of an acid by a base.
Salts have two different names, where does the first name come from and where does the second come from?
The first name comes from the metal, metal carbonate or metal oxide. The second name comes from the acid.
What salts do nitric acid always produce?
(metal) nitrate and they contain the nitrate ion, NO3-
What salts do hydrochloric acid always produce?
(metal) chloride and they contain the chloride atom Cl-
What salts do sulfuric acid always produce?
(metal) sulfate and they contain the sulfate ion, SO4 2-
How is an insoluble salt formed?
When two soluble salts react together in a precipitation reaction.
How is a soluble salt formed?
Reacting acids with either soluble or insoluble bases.
How do you work out the empirical formula?
1 find masses
2 look up given Ar values
3 divide masses by Ar
4 find the ratio
