Rate of Reaction Flashcards
1
Q
Name 5 factors that effect the rate of reaction.
A
- Temperature
- Concentration
- Pressure of reacting gases
- Surface area of reacting solids
- Use of catalysts
2
Q
What are chemical reactions?
A
Reactant particles colliding with enough energy (activation energy). The more frequently the particles collide and the greater proportion of collisions with enough energy, the greater the rate of reaction.
3
Q
Name two ways of measuring rate of reaction.
A
- Measure how fast the reactant is used up
- Measure how fast the product is formed
The method chosen depends on the reaction being studied
4
Q
Name the two things you can measure when measuring the rate of reaction.
A
- The mass of a substance - solid, liquid or gas - measured on a balance
- The volume of a gas - measured with a gas syringe.
5
Q
What is the formula for rate of reaction?
A
rate of reaction = amount of product formed or amount of reactant used / time taken
6
Q
Name 5 factors that increase the rate of reaction.
A
- Increased temperature
- Increased concentration of a dissolved reactant
- The pressure of a reactant gas is increased
- The reactant solid is broke into smaller pieces - increasing the surface area.
- A catalyst is used
