Q

What are chemical reactions?

A

Reactant particles colliding with enough energy (activation energy). The more frequently the particles collide and the greater proportion of collisions with enough energy, the greater the rate of reaction.

Q

Name two ways of measuring rate of reaction.

A
  1. Measure how fast the reactant is used up
  2. Measure how fast the product is formed
The method chosen depends on the reaction being studied

Q

Name the two things you can measure when measuring the rate of reaction.

A
  1. The mass of a substance - solid, liquid or gas - measured on a balance
  2. The volume of a gas - measured with a gas syringe.

Q

Name 5 factors that increase the rate of reaction.

A
  1. Increased temperature
  2. Increased concentration of a dissolved reactant
  3. The pressure of a reactant gas is increased
  4. The reactant solid is broke into smaller pieces - increasing the surface area.
  5. A catalyst is used
