Salts Flashcards
How is sodium hydroxide made?
Passing electricity through a solution of NaCl (brine), causes it’s decomposition and forms NaOH. This is called the chlor-alkali process.
Cl gas anode, H gas and NaOH at cathode.
What is Hydrogen gas used for?
Fuels, margarine, ammonia.
What is Cl gas used for?
Water treatment, CFCs, disinfectants.
What is HCl used for?
Cleaning steel, ammonium chloride, cosmetics.
What is NaOH used for?
De-greasing metals, soap and detergents, paper making.
What is bleach made of and what is used for?
NaOH + Cl gas
Household bleaches, bleaching fabric.
How is bleaching powder made?
Cl gas from chlor-alkali process acts on dry slaked line (CaOH2).
It is CaOCl2.
Why is bleaching powder used?
Bleaching, oxidising agent, disinfectant.
How is baking soda made?
NaCl + H2O + CO2 + NH3 –> NH4Cl + NaHCO3
What happens when Sodium bicarbonate is heated?
Decomposes to Sodium Carbonate, water and carbon dioxide.
