- little light pollution, it is one of the darkest places on earth
- Sutherland is situated at a relatively high altitude
- most nights are cloudless, as the Karoo had a low rainfall

A
- based on a reflector telescope
- mirror is composed of 91 smaller mirrors
- the main mirror is partially fixed into position
- it has a diameter of 11m
- mirrors are controlled by computer
