Q

How do you prepare a salt by precipitation?

A

1 - Identify 2 soluble salts containing the ions needed
2 - Add the solutions together
3 - Filter off the ppt, then wash with distilled water and dry

Q

How do prepare soluble salts?

A

Soluble salts can be made by reacting metals/metal oxides with acids. The metal ions replace the hydrogen ions in the acid

This method is also known as neutralisation, and works with a solid metal, base, carbonate or an alkali solution (Titration)

Q

What are the steps in preparing a soluble salt?

A

1 - Add the metal (oxide) to the acid in excess
2 - Gently warm the flask, and filter off the excess metal (oxide)
3 - Evaporate the water from the filtrate until the crystallisation point is reached
4 - Filter, wash and dry the crystals using as little water possible
