Alkanoic Acids Flashcards
What is the general formula for alkanoic acids?
CₙH₂ₙ₊₁COOH
Where do organic acids naturally occur?
Vinegar (ethanoic)
Stinging nettles and ant’s sting (methanoic)
Rancid Butter (butanoic)
Citrus Fruits (citric)
Milk (lactic acid)
What are the physical properties of alkanoic acids?
They are covalent compounds, with a strong polar OH bond (stronger than the OH in alcohols), high boiling points, extremely soluble in water.
What occurs when Alkanoic acid is dissolved in water?
The acid is partially dissociates to give ‘free’ H+ ions
What are the reactions of alkanoic acids?
Reactions with Metals, Bases, Carbohydrates and Hydrogen Carbonates, Combustion(with dry acids) and Condensation / Esterification
Acid + Metal?
Salt + Hydrogen Gas
Acid + Carbohydrate / Hydrogen Carbonates?
Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
Acid + Base
Salt + Water
Combustion of Anhydrous Acids
Carbon Dioxide + Water
Condensation (Alkanoic Acid + Alcohol)
Ester + Water
