Salivary & Lymphatic Flashcards
Development of Lymph Nodes
LEC migrate from blood vessels
Aggregate to form lymph sacs with mesenchyme
Form lymph nodes
Nodules become surrounded by sinuses with mesenchyme completing the lymph node
Lymphatic cells migrate from mesenchyme, thymus, and bone marrow
A capsule and trabeculae surround the lymphatic nodules from surrounding mesenchyme
What are tonsils and their features? Histology?
Aggregates of un encapsulated lymphatic tissue
Covered in nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Form tonsilar crypts
What are the 4 tonsils of the tonsilar ring?
Palatine
Pharyngeal
Lingual
Tubal
What are the 6 main salivary glands?
Parotid, Submandibula, Sublingual
How is the parotid gland formed?
From invagination of ectoderm between the max and mand swellings
Tubular ducts sink into the mesenchyme
Duct opening in mouth is transferred to the inner surface of check during fusion of maxillary and mandibular swellings
How are the submandilbular and sublingual glands formed?
Similar process in the floor of oral cavity
From epithelial-mesenchymal interactions
Characteristics of Serrous secretions
Watery fluid
Enzymes (amylases, peroxidase, lysozyme)
Lactoferrin (chelates iron needed for bacterial growth)
Ig A (neutralizes bacteria and viruses)
How does saliva differ due to stimulation/innervation?
Parasympathetic- thin
Sympathetic- thicker
Characteristics of Mucous secretions
Thick, glycoproteins called mucins
What are the 3 kind of salivary ducts?
Intercalated duct, striated, duct, excretory duct
Intercalated Duct
Receives fluid from acinus
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Striated Duct
Produces hypotonic saliva by reabsorbing NaCl
Secretes bicarbonate (buffer)
Manipulates saliva
Simple cuboidal to columnar epithelium
Excretory Duct
Connect to mouth
simple cuboidal to columnar epithelium and occasionally stratified columnar epithelium
Minor Salivary Glands
Produce lipase and lysozyme
when damaged form mucoceles
Parotid Gland location and secretion
Lateral border of face and anterior to ear
Produces 25% saliva
Mainly Serous secreting, largest gland
Excretes through parotid duct and parotid papilla
Primarily serous secreting
