What are serous type salivary glands?
Parotid gland and ebner gland
Which salivary glands are mucinous?
Palatal gland and those situated at the base and lateral border of the tongue
Which salivary glands are mixed mucinous and serous?
Submandibular and sublingual
Mucinous is more prominent in the later
What are minor salivary glands?
They are predominately mucinous with the exception of the ones found in the lip, cheek, and apex of the tongue which are mixed
What is the most common gland for sialolithiasis?
Submandibular gland
What is a ranula?
Collection of extravasated mucin from the sublingual gland that presents as a cysts of the floor of the mouth
What gland is commonly involved with sclerosing polycystic adenosis?
Parotid gland
What is the most common malignant submandibular salivary gland tumor?
Adenoid cystic carcinoma
But it can also arise in the parotid gland
What tumors appears light brown to mahogany color?
Oncocytoma
How does adenoid cystic carcinoma metastasize?
By direct extension to lymph nodes or hematogenous to the lungs
How does adenoid cystic carcinoma appear grossly?
It appears solid and circumscribed but under microscope it extends beyond palpable limits
What is a hallmark of adenoid cystic carcinoma?
Infiltrative capacity to nerves
Where do most pleomorphic adenoma occur?
Superficial portion of the parotid gland, the rest are in the deep lobe
What is a characteristic of pleomorphic adenoma that can cause recurrence?
Improper surgery by shelling out
PA have pseudopods of extra capsular growth
When pleomorphic adenoma recur how do they recur?
Multi focal and multinodular
