Salivary Glands Flashcards
1
Q
Conditions of the salivary glands
A
- Inflammatory/Sialadenitis - trauma, viral (mumps), bacterial (s aureus, strep viridans), autoimmune (Sjogren syndrome)
- Sialolithiasis - ductal obstruction
- Neoplasms
2
Q
Neoplasms of the salivary glands
A
- affects parotid (75%) > submandibular (10%) > sublingual & minor glands
1. Pleomorphic Adenoma
2. Warthin Tumour
3
Q
Features of pleomorphic adenoma of the salivary gland
A
- benign epithelial mixed tumour
- most common tumour of salivary glands, 10x more common in the parotid, 40y
- painless, slow growing mass in front of & below ear
- prone to recurrence, but malignant transformation rare
4
Q
Morphology of pleomorphic adenoma of the salivary gland
A
G:
- lobulated, unencapsulated knobbly mass
- with solid, firm, whitish, translucent chondroid cut, cartilage-like surface
M:
- epithelial components (ducts, squamous metaplasia)
- myoepithelial components
- chondromyxoid components
5
Q
Features of Warthin Tumour
A
- benign
- almost exclusively in parotid, superficial lobe
- male predominance, 50-70y
6
Q
Morphology of Warthin Tumour
A
- oval encapsulated mass
- soft, pale grey w spaces filled w milky secretions
- spaces lined by double layer of epithelial cells, dense lymphoid stroma w germinal centres
