Features of pleomorphic adenoma of the salivary gland

A
  • benign epithelial mixed tumour
  • most common tumour of salivary glands, 10x more common in the parotid, 40y
  • painless, slow growing mass in front of & below ear
  • prone to recurrence, but malignant transformation rare

A

G:

  • lobulated, unencapsulated knobbly mass
  • with solid, firm, whitish, translucent chondroid cut, cartilage-like surface

M:

  • epithelial components (ducts, squamous metaplasia)
  • myoepithelial components
  • chondromyxoid components

  • almost exclusively in parotid, superficial lobe
  • male predominance, 50-70y

  • spaces lined by double layer of epithelial cells, dense lymphoid stroma w germinal centres
