salivary glands Flashcards
2 types of saliva in the autonomic system
parasympathetic -runny - cranial nerves 7 and 9
sympathetic - thick- via periarterial plexus
stimulation of saliva process
goes to medulla- then parasympathetic axons tell cn 7 or 9
parotid gland drains
upper 2nd permenant molar
parotid duct
problem with parotid gland
encapsulated by investing layer of deep cervical fascia so cannot expand causes pressure to build and severe pain
innervation of parotid gland
cn9-glossopharyngeal
cn9 exits through jugular foramen
synapse otic ganglion
cnv3 to reach parotid gland
pre and post - depends on the position
sub mandibular gland drains
sub lingual caruncle but helped to get there by sub mandibular duct
2 parts to the sub mandibular gland
deep- below myohyoid line
superficial- on myohyoid line
sub lingual drians
sub lingual folds
around 8-20 ducts
innervation of sub lingual and sub mandibular glands
cn7- facial nerve
cn7 hitches ride with cnv3 to the synapse and then distributed to the glands
