staph aureus
- Sjorogen’s syndrome
- Sialolithasis (stones in duct)
- Mumps
- HIV
- Granulomatous disease
- Autoimmune disease
how do patients present with acute sialodentis?
- erythema
- pain
- swelling
- pus from affected duct
what type of secretions are produced by:
- parotid
- submandibular
Parotid = watery , serous
Submandibular = thick, mucoid secretions
what is the treatment for acute sialodentitis?
- IV abx for infection
- IV fluids
- warm compress / massage
- reduce salivary stasis by eating citrus fruits
- oral irrigation
what gland is most prone to sialothiasis (stones)
submandibular gland
How does sialothiasis present?
Pain and swelling of gland at meal times
What are the causes of sialothiasis?
- salivary stasis
- dehydration
- abnormalities in calcium metabolism
what invx are done for sialothiasis?
Xray
- sialogram
- USS
What is the treatment of silothiasis?
- Intraoral Siololithotomy
- Intraductal Siololithotomy with sialendoscopy
- Gland excision
What is Sjorgen’s syndrome?
autoimmune disease characterised by dry eyes (xeropthalmia) and dry mouth.
more common in women
leads to salivary gland hypertrophy.
What is the test for Sjorgen’s syndrome?
+ve test for anti-Ro and anti-La serologies
What is the treatment for Sjorgen’s syndrome?
Treat symptoms with :
- salivary substitutes
- eye drops
- oral hygiene
