Salivary Funtion Flashcards
1
Q
What category of drugs are known to cause xerostomia
A
antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, antipsychotics, antiHTN, anticholinergics
2
Q
what are the consequences of xerostomia
A
- difficulty in chewing, swallowing, and speaking
- increased risk of mucosal, gingival and tongue lesion
- increased risk of candidiasis, dental carries, periodontal dz and other oral fungal and bacterial infxns.
- taste alteration
- oral halitosis
- increased fluid intake
- reduced QOL
3
Q
What mediates salivary flow
A
both PNS and SNS
- Ach binds to M3 receptors to increase IPE and Ca causing activation of apical membrane Cl- channel and basolateral K channel.
- PNS makes a protein poor secretion.
- SNS makes a protein rich secretion
4
Q
MOA of cevimeline
A
M3»M1 agonists
5
Q
ADE of cevimeline
A
- CI - asthma, closed angle glaucoma of iris
- Precautions - angina, beast-feeding, bronchitis, kids, cholelithiasis, COPD, driving/operating machinery (decrease visual acuity), geriatric, MI, nephrolitathiasis, pregnancy
6
Q
MOA of pilocarpine
A
ALL muscarinic receptors agonist
7
Q
ADE of pilocarpine
A
- CI- asthma, closed angle glaucoma of iris
2. Precautions - same as cevimeline plus psychosis b/c crosses BBB
8
Q
What is treatment for sialorrhea
A
- labeled anticholinergics - botulinum toxin, scopolamine
