salivary and gastric secretions Flashcards
What volume of saliva is produced per day?
1 1/2 Litres
Name the three salivary glands and the % of saliva produced by each one
Sublingual- 5%
Parotid- 25%
Submanibular- 70%
What are the three functions of saliva?
Lubrication- facilitate swallowing and speech
Protection- of corrosion of the teeth and against vomiting, bacteria and dry mouth
Digestion- lingual lipase and alpha amylase
name the two enzymes in saliva and their targets
alpha amylase (also called ptyalin) - carbohydrates lingual lipase- fats
What makes up the salivon?
(The functional unit of the salivary duct) acinus, intercalated duct and striated duct
is primary saliva secretion isotonic or hypotonic?
isotonic
are secondary saliva secretions isotonic or hypotonic?
hypotonic
what are the two types of saliva and which glands produce them?
serous- watery and protein
mucus- mucins (glycoproteins)
parotid gland- serous
sublingual and submandibular = a mix of the two
what happens as flow rate increases?
Na+ concentration increases, time for reabsorption and secretion decreases
What is the gastric mucosa divided into?
oxyntic gland area and pyloric gland area
which cells are in the oxyntic gland and what do they secrete?
parietal cells- HCl (gastric acid)
Chief cells- pepsinogen
which cells are in the pyloric gland and what do they secrete?
G cells- Gastrin
Mucous cells- pepsinogen
What is cimetidine?
A histamine 2 receptor antagonist
which cells produce histamine?
Enterochromaffin- like cells
What four components make up gastric juices?
Intrinsic factor, mucus, pepsin and H+ ions
