fluid absorption Flashcards
How many litres of fluid do we absorb per day?
9L, (2L diet, 500mL bile, 2L stomach, gastric juices, 1 1/2L saliva, then pancreatic and intestinal secretions)
where does most of the reabsorption occur?
small intestine- 8 1/2 litres
How does vibrio cholerae act?
toxin produced by bacteria binds to G protein which activates adenylate cyclase and increases production of cAMP which increases cl- secretion into the lumen. cl- is followed by water.
What is oral rehydration therapy?
fluid replacement to prevent dehydration. salt and sugar solution administered.
what is a by product of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)?
calcitriol
what are the action of calcitriol?
increase calcium reabsorption, stimulate ca2+ ATPase synthesis
where could calcium be sequestered?
in the endoplasmic reticulum
what regulates calcium levels?
parathyroid hormone. levels are the inverse of each other
what converts ferric (Fe3+) iron to ferrous (Fe2+) iron?
duodenal reductase. Fe2+ is more soluable.
what is intrinsic factor and where is it produce?
a glycoprotein required to absorb B12. secreted by the parietal cells in the stomach
