Salicylate Overdose Flashcards
1
Q
Give some examples of salicylate drugs:
A
- Mesalazine
- Olsalazine
- Acetylsalicyclic acid
2
Q
What are the features of a salicylate overdose?
A
- Hyperventilation (centrally stimulate respiration)
- Tinnitus
- Lethargy
- sweating
- pyrexia
- N&V
- Hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia
- Seizures
- Coma
3
Q
When doing an ABG on a patient with salicylate overdose, what picture would it paint? Why?
A
Mixed respiratory alkalosis and metabolic acidosis as early stimulation of the respiratory centre leads to respiratory alkalosis whilst later the direct acid effect of salicylated (combined aith acute renal failure) may lead to acidosis
4
Q
What is the management of salicylate overdose?
A
- A-E assessment
- Charcoal
- Urinary alkalinization with IV sodium bicarbonate
- Haemodialysis
5
Q
What are the indication for haemodialysis in salicylate overdose?
A
- Serum concentration >700mg/L
- Metabolic acidosis resistant to treatment
- Acute renal failure
- Pulmonary oedema
- Seizures
- Coma
