Why put the Quays in Salford and not on the coast
Manchester Ship Canal
It’s deep and straight to allow ships through
Construction began 1887-1894
3000 jobs
Biggest river navigation canal in the world
Reasons for growth at Salford Quays
5000 employed directly
In 1914 it was one of the largest pot authorities globally
5% UK imports and 4.4% exports
Population increase from 12,000 in 1812 to 220,000 by end of 19th century
(rural to urban migration)
Living conditions
low skilled low paid jobs so inexpensive terraced housing
Densely packed, small houses ( 80 per acre)
Heavily polluted
Families with lots of children
When, why and how did it decline
Containerisation- universal containers to meet global goods demand
Bigger ships that can’t fit down Manchester canal
Unloaded by cranes so dockers lost their jobs
Change in economic activity-1800-1870 Britain produced 50% of world but
now China produces cheapest steel, Britain can’t compete with cheaper
products abroad so decline in manufacturing industry and unemployment
Poor quality of environment- heavily bombed during ww2, contaminated land and water
Social decline-1960s= slum, white flight to suburbs, closed in 1982, derelict
area, one of ups most derived areas, so many unemployed that wages fell,
poor health, low eduction, shorter line expectancy, 75% pupil premium
kids, moss side= gun capital UK
