- 1577: Raid spanish ports
- 1578: executes a former friend due to mutiny
- 1578: First british person to sail through the straits of magellan. Some ships broke and lost
- 1578: Surviving ships raid spanish ports on the coast of South America
- 1579: Only Drake’s ship remaining, claims West side of North America for himself
- Goes around south africa and returns to Plymouth
- Knighted on board his ship, Golden Hind

- Allowed to colonise any land not ruled by a Christian
- give the queen a fifth of the gold and silver found there
- Set up a colony in America called Roanoke, didn’t last
