Q

What does it mean to be “In Irons”

How would you get into that condition

A

Sailing craft is stopped and pointing into the “no-go zone” with the sails luffing

Trying to tack without enough momentum

18
Q

What is “Jibing”

A

Bringing the wind from one side of of the boat to the other by turning the stern through the wind

A way of changing tacks while heading downwind

19
Q

What is a “Port Tack”

A

Wind is from the port side while tacking

The wind is changing in a clockwise direction

24
Q

What does “Weather Helm” mean

A

Forces that try to turn the boat “windward”

  • Boat turns windward
  • You counteract by using more rudder which slows you down
25
Q

Why is sailing “By The Lee” dangerous

A

Accidental jibes can occur which damages equipment and can cause injury

26
Q

When would you want to “Reef”

A

When heeling more than 30 degrees
Lee deck is constantly awash
Steering becomes difficult
Boat is pounding to hard

27
Q

What is “Tacking” or “Coming About”

A

Sailing as close INTO the wind in one direction, then changing course to sail as close to the wind in the other direction (ZigZagging up wind)
-Tacking swings the boat 90 degrees through the wind

28
Q

What does “Heeling” mean

A

When a sailboat leans over in the water, pushed by the wind

29
Q
