Schooner
A type of sailboat with two or more masts, the foremast being lower than the mainmast
Catboat
Has a single mast mounted far forward
-Does not carry a jib
Cutter or “Cutter Rig”
Similar to a Sloop with a single mast and mainsail but;
The mast is usually carried further aft
and
Forward of the mast are usually 2 headsails; a jib and a staysail
-Boat oftentimes has a “Bowsprit”
Ketch
Similar to a Sloop but there is a second shorter mast and sail called a “Mizzen Mast” and “Mizzen Sail”
- The second mast is astern of the mainmast but forward of the rudder post
- They can also be “Cutter Rigged”
Sloop
Has 1 mast and 2 sails
-1 headsail in front of the mast and 1 mainsail aft of the mast
Can be a “Bermuda Rig” or a “Gaff Rig”
What is a “Gaff Rig”
Gaff Rigs have triangular foresails and gaff rigged mainsails
What is a “Fractional Rig”
The forestay on a fractional rig does not reach the top of the mast
-Smaller and easier to handle headsails
What is a “Bermuda Rig”
They have triangle sails fore and aft
Yawl
Similar to a Ketch however;
-The “Mizzen Mast” is carried astern of the rudder post and the sail is smaller
