SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR O2 BOTTLES Flashcards

1
Q

List Safety Precautions for O2 Bottles

A
  1. Handle O2 with care
  2. A minimum of 500 PSI is required to begin administration of O2.
  3. You should discontinue the use at 200 PSI (to help prevent corrosion of the bottle)
  4. The bottle is considered empty at 50 PSI.
  5. Never allow O2 that is flowing under pressure (cabin) to come into contact with oil, grease, dust or lint (it can cause a burning sensation)

Q

What is the difference between Medical and Aviation Oxygen?

A

Aviation O2 is 100% pure and very nearly 100% dry. Medical O2 has higher moisture which could freeze in higher altitudes.

Q

How do you administer Therapeutic Oxygen?

A
  1. Inform PIC that you will need to administer O2 to the pax (mention seat) - depending on the urgency you can ask a pax to talk to PIC while you assist the pax needing O2
  2. Locate/ Go to GEEC and check O2 levels for sufficient O2 prior to administering
  3. Clean your hands and ensure pax nose and mouth areas are clear of grease and make up
  4. Unfold rebreather bag and check for creases
  5. Open the O2 ON bottle knob so the O2 can start flowing and ensure it is by checking the following signs:
    * The green portion of your rebreather bag will inflate (if fitted)
*The rebreather bag will inflate slightly
*You will hear a hissing noise
*Drop in pressure in the pressure indicator gauge
  6. Secure mask on Pax covering mouth and nose and adjust
  7. Remain with pax and offer reassurance
  8. Frequently check O2 flow by observing the drop in pressure in the indicator gauge
  9. When finished administering O2, REMOVE MASK and then TURN OFF O2
  10. Discard used mask, reattach the spare one and restow bottle
  11. Notify PIC of:
    *Pax condition
    *If medical assistance is required
*The need to replace the spare mask
*PSI level on pressure indicator gauge

23
Q

How would FA use the Crew Sup O2?

A
  1. Locate and ensure O2 levels
  2. Clean hands and face for excess grease
  3. Unfold the rebreather bag
  4. Free of kinks on tube
  5. Turn on O2 check flow indications
  6. Put it over mouth and nose
  7. Check pressure and drop in pressure as indicated on gauge
  8. When done, remove mask then TURN OFF o2 bottle
  9. Discard and replace mask with spare
  10. Inform PIC to order new one from Engineering.
24
Q

What are the 4 signs that the O2 is flowing correctly?

A
  1. Green portion of rebreather bag will inflate- if fitted
  2. Hissing sound
  3. Rebreather will inflate slightly
  4. Drop in pressure as per indicator gauge
25
Q

What does the FA do with the oxygen masks once they have been used?

A

Discard and reattach a spare one. Inform PIC to get a new spare and add to cabin log.

26
Q

What is Oxygen Paradox?

A

It’s when pax suffering from SEVERE Hypoxia when been administered with O2 feel worse before feeling better. It normally lasts 15 SECONDS. DO NOT REMOVE OXYGEN. Encourage deep breathing and reassure pax symptoms will get better soon.
