What is coasting?
Travelling (esp downhill) in neutral or with the clutch pressed down.
What is the overall stopping distance?
From the moment you realise you must brake to when the vehicle stops.
= thinking distance + braking distance
What is aquaplaning?
The tyre lift off the road surface and skate on a film of water.
What should you do if your steering becomes light on an icy surface?
ease off the accelerator
don’t brake until your steering feels normal again
How do you reduce the risk of skidding and wheelspin?
Drive at a low speed and in as high a gear as possible
What should you do if you start to skid?
- release the footbrake and reapply it gently
- steer smoothly in the direction of the skid
What should you do when you enter a contraflow system?
- reduce speed in good time
- choose appropriate lane in good time
- keep the cirrect separation distance
What is a hazard and what are the different types?
A hazard is a situation which may require you as a driver to respond by taking action such as braking or steering.
- static hazard: roundabouts and junctions
- moving hazard: other road users
- road and weather conditions

When must you NOT overtake?
- if you’re turning left shortly afterwards
- if signs and road markings prohibit this
- when approaching a junction
- when the view ahead is blocked
What does it mean if a person is walking with a white stick with a red band or has a dog with a red-and-white checked harness?
Both deaf and blind
What does it mean if a person has a dog with a yellow or burgundy coat?
they have hearing difficulties
