What documentation do you need before you can legally drive on the road?
- tax paid on car
- valid driving licence
- valid insurance cover
- valid MOT certificate if required by the car
How long are MOT certificates valid for?
One year
What happens if the police ask to see my documents and I don’t have them with me?
You can produce them at a police station within 7 days
Who can accompany a learner driver?
A person who is 21 years old and is holding a licence for 3 years.
What should you do if a tyre bursts or gets a puncture whilst you’re driving?
hold the steering wheel firmly
pull up slowly or let the car roll to a stop on the side of the road
What should you do if you break down on a level crossing?
Get everyone out of the car and call the signal operator. Only move the car if the signal operator tells you to do so.
What should you do if you break down on the motorway?
Pull onto the hard shoulder, call for help from one of the emergency phones. Wait near your vehicle but well away from the carriageway and hard shoulder.
What should you do before driving through a tunnel?
Remove any sunglasses and put your dipped lights on.
What should you do if you or the vehicle in front of you breaks down in the middle of the tunnel?
switch off your engine
switch on hazard lights
go and call for help from the nearest emergency telephone
What should you do if your car catches fire whilst driving through a tunnel?
Drive out of the tunnel if you can do so without causing further damage.
If not possible:
stop
switch on hazard warning lights
try to put out the fire (only if it’s small)
call for help at the nearest emergency point
How far should you place a warning triange from your car if you’ve broken down?
45 metres (147 feet) behind your vehicle. Never on a motorway.
