Safety Issues Flashcards
What is CAMTS?
Commission for the Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems
What is AMRM?
Air Medical Resource Management
What are the critical phases of flight?
Takeoff, Landing, Refueling, and Taxi
How often are check ins required?
15 min flying
45 min sitting on the ground
What are miscellaneous CAMTS standards?
5 live intubations before beginning missions and quarterly intubations after
Flame retardant clothing needing 1/4 inch to be able to be pulled away from body
Safe aircraft operation comes before patient care
Long range flights are any flights greater than 3 hours
Seat belts are required at all times other than straight and level flight
What are the rotary wing pilot in command qualifications?
2000 hours total flight time 1200 hours in a helicopter 1000 hours as PIC 100 hours as PIC at night Must be instrument rated
What are fixed wing pilot in command qualifications?
2000 hours total flight time 1000 hours as PIC 100 hours as PIC at night Must posses Airline Transport Pilot certificate Must be instrument rated
What is FAR Part 91?
A Federal Aviation Administration rule that Applies to everyone (general FAA rules) and means a no duty day and no weather minimums
What is FAR Part 135?
A Federal Aviation Administration rule that regards flights that are flying passengers for money. The max duty day is 14 hours which includes 8 hours of total flying time. Also there must be 8 hours bottle to throttle
What are the CAMTS Rotorwing Weather Minimums?
Non Mountainous Local Day 800’ 2 miles Non Mountainous Local Night 800’ 3 miles Non Mountainous Cross Country Day 800’ 3 miles Non Mountainous Cross Country Night 1000’ 3 miles Mountainous Local Day 800’ 3 miles Mountainous Local Night 1000’ 3 miles Mountainous Cross Country Day 1000’ 3 miles Mountainous Cross Country Night 1000’ 5 miles
What is marginal weather?
Weather that is very close to or at minimums.
What does it mean to be below minimums?
Weather that is under minimums
What is the difference between VFR and IFR?
Visual Flight Rules (VFR) means you can fly only in weather conditions that you can see where you are flying whereas Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) means that the weather conditions do not allow safe flight with sight alone and instruments are needed. In addition to this there is Inadvertent Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IIMC) which means that the pilot began flying in VFR weather and unexpectedly needed to fly IFR
What are the requirements of a HLZ at the point of injury?
Must have communication with the ground, area large enough to land (100’ x 100’), 1 approach and departure heading, 2 passes required prior to landing (1 high/1 low), at night have 2 vehicles cross their high beams
What are the requirements of a permanent helipad?
Must have 2 approach and departure headings
Perimeter lighting
Landing beacon
Windsock
What are the levels of in flight emergencies?
Land immediately: engine failure/fire/rpg in tail boom
Land ASAP: low transmission pressure/ chip light
Land as soon as practical: go to closest convenient place to check something non emergent
What is the Pre-Crash Sequence?
Lay pt flat
Turn off O2
Assume crash position (secured seat belt, sit up straight, helmet strap tight/visor down, knees together/feet 6” apart and flat on floor, arms crossed on chest, chin to chest
What is the post crash sequence?
Turn off in order: throttle, fuel, and battery
Exit aircraft
Assemble at 12 o’clock position
Begin building shelter, fire, gather water, create signal
What is the ELT?
The Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) self activates during crash sequence at 4Gs (can be manually activated) transmitting at a 121.5 MHz frequency (406 MHz it it is upgraded) and generates a constant repeating alarm over headset when nearing a crash site
What is EMTALA?
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act is legislation that makes it so action must be taken if a person requires emergency care to sustain life or is actively giving birth, or if a person is injured within 150 yards of a hospital they must be treated, and that the sending physician is responsible until they arrive at the next facility
According to EMTALA what is included in the Standard of Care (Negligence)?
Presence of duty Breach of duty Foreseeability Causation Injury Damages
According to EMTALA what is included in the Duty to Report?
Child abuse
Elderly abuse
Violent crime
