-observe for active bleeding, wounds, hair
-feel/ask if pt is wearing lotion or any other products
-use wet towel to clean area (hard enough to get dead cells off)

-hair, scars, rashes, bruises, cuts
-allergies
-quality of skin
-tattoos
-dirt/oil/OTC topical
