A

be sure there’s enough room at bottom blanket so baby can bend legs up and out from body

A

once baby is about a month old you might want to stop swaddling when awake bc can interfere w/ mobility and development older babies

diff ways to hold baby

A
  • cradle hold: place baby head in bend elbow and use your arm to support the body.
  • place baby head over shoulder, and use one hand to support head, and other to support the body
  • football hold: with the baby head in your hand and body under your arm; feet pointed toward your elbow
  • once baby can hold head up you can hold on hip but in lab they said its not good for you
  • avoid holding baby by ribs
  • when putting down make sure support head until touch mattress or car seat

picking up infant or toddler:

A
  • lying on back: slide one hand under neck and other hand under the lower back; lean close and and lift as a whole bundle, keeping head little higher than rest of body
  • lying on stomach: roll onto back and do above
  • handing you baby: lean close to person and collect in tight bundle
  • toddler: grasp under arms or around body

nursemaid elbow

A
  • avoid pulling child by hands/arms and don’t swing by arms
  • condition in a child where bone in the forearm slips out of place where normally attached to elbow. occur when child pulled too hard by hands or wrist, picked up by one arm, lifted in air by arms. Generally effect children under 5, newborns esp delicate- risk for shaken baby synd so never pick up if mad or frustrated

  • transport in crib isolette or bed
  • you can have mom get in wheelchair and hold to escort to procedure
