Name 2 hazards on a construction sight.
1) Heavy machinery
2) People walking around with large objects at hand
Name 5 hazards in a lab and give examples.
1) Infections- Sewage, potentially more than 100 viruses in wastewater also bacteria and protozoa.
2) Acids and Alkalise- COD and TKN
3) Fire- Inflammable solvents
4) Chemicals- Toxic by mouth, skin or respiration. Some can cause cancer and birth defects.
5) UV Light- Burn, blind, mutagenic
Define a hazard.
A hazard is the capacity to do harm.
Define a risk.
A risk is the probability that a hazard will be expressed.
What should you do if acid was to firstly enter your eye and secondly come into contact with your body?
First go to the eye wash station and secondly shower to get the acid off you.
What should you do when you have a burn?
Rinse it under cold water for several minutes.
What should you do if you have a cut?
Apply pressure to stop the bleeding.
What should you be wearing in a lab? (4)
A lab coat, shoes, trousers and eye protection.
What should you be regularly be doing when dealing with chemicals?
Washing your hands.
What could you consider having?
A vaccination.
What does COSHH stand for?
Control of substances hazardous to health.
What should you never do in a lab?
Eat, chewing gum or drinking.
If they is a spillage what should you do?
Clean immediately.
What should you do if you break something?
Report it.
What are students responsibilities? (2)
