Safety Flashcards
What is the cardinal rule of safety in the laboratory?
Work cleanly and deliberately: don’t rush and above all think before you act
Why should contacts not be worn in the lab? (3)
- The lens might impede rapid flushing of the surface of the eye in an emergency
- Soft contacts are porous. Aerosols of corrosive or toxic materials may be absorbed into the lens
- Chemicals or dust might get trapped behind contact lenses
What should you do if you get chemicals in your eye?
Flush eyes with cold water for 15 min. Lightly cover the eye with a sterile eye pad and go to hospital
How do you treat alkali burns?
Flush the burn with water for about 15 min and apply a dressing
How do you treat an acid burn?
Treat the same as another burn, but bathe the area gently with a solution of sodium bicarbonate before applying the dressing
How do you treat an electrical burn?
Shut off the current or free the person using something non-conducting. Check breathing and treat burns as for any other burn.
What are four things not to do to burns?
- Do not remove stuck clothing
- Do not burst any blisters
- Do not apply and cream or ointment
- Do not apply cotton wool or similar material or use an adhesive dressing
What does WHMIS stand for?
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
What does WHMIS demand by attached with all chemicals sold?
A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
What does the Material Safety Data Sheet contain? (7)
- Toxicity
- Health hazards
- Physical data
- fire and explosion hazards
- Reactivity data
- Spill and leakage procedures
- Precautions for handling and storage
WHMIS hazardous symbols are usually ____ on a ____ background
WHMIS hazardous symbols are usually black on an orange background
What are the 8 WHMIS precaution symbols?
- Pressurized vessel (WHMIS class A)
- Flammable/combustible (WHMIS class B)
- Oxidizing (WHMIS class C)
- Toxic/poisonous (WHMIS class D, division 1)
- Harmful (WHMIS class D, division 2)
- Biohazards (WHMIS class D, division 3)
- Corrosive (WHMIS class E)
- Dangerously reactive/explosive (WHMIS class F)
NOTE: Radiation not part of WHMIS
What are three types of biohazards (WHMIS class D, division 3)?
- Micro-organisms
- Animals
- Body fluids
