Safety Flashcards
From least dangerous to most dangerous, what are the degrees of hazard?
Caution, Warning, Danger
What does HHPS stand for?
Hazardous Household Product Symbols
What does WHMIS stand for?
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
What three ways does WHMIS provide workers with?
- Informative labels, in French and English, on the containers of all controlled products (identified as a hazard and proper procedures must be followed; does not mean banned!).
- A Safety Data Sheet
- Workers must complete an education program
SDS includes information about physical properties and chemical hazards. What four pieces of information?
- Instructions on handling
- Instructions on storing
- Instructions on disposal
- Instructions/procedures for an accident
What are the two signal words for WHMIS?
Danger: severe hazards
Warning: less severe hazards
Is Class 1 or Class 2 WHMIS more dangerous?
Class 1
What does “gases cylinder” mean?
Gases under pressure.
- Could be dissolved or liquified by compression or refrigeration.
- Potential energy if gas comes out
What does “flame” mean?
Flammable materials.
- “I didn’t need to try.”
- Under normal conditions, capable of catching fire in the presence of a spark or flame.
What does “flame over circle” mean?
Oxidizing hazards.
- “Helps other things burn”
- Increase the risk of fire if they are with flammable materials.
What does “skull and crossbones” mean?
Acute toxicity: fatal.
- Short exposure = death or immediate injury
What does “exclamation mark” mean?
Acute Toxicity: harmful.
- May cause less serious health effects.
- Skin irritants, eye irritants, etc.
What does “health hazard” mean?
Materials suspected of causing serious health effects. More long-term.
Ex: Carcinogens, germ cell mutagens, respiratory irritants, cancer-causing
What does “corrosion” mean?
- Of acids, or caustic (very basic)
- For corrosive damage to metal, as well as skin and eyes
What does “exploding bomb” mean?
Reactivity hazards
- May self-rect dangerous (explode) upon standing or when exposed to physical shock, increased temperature/pressure
