What is WHMIS?
Workplace Hazardous Materials Informations System. Provides health and safety information for hazardous products found in workplaces.
What are the 4 main purposes of WHMIS?
Classification, Labeling, Provision of information, worker education and training.
Who oversee’s workplace safety in Ontario?
Health Canada, Ministry of Labour, Canadian Centre for Occupational Safety, and CVO.
What are some risks of working in the Veterinary Field?
Harmful Chemicals, Infectious disease, Radiation, injury due to animals.
Chemicals can commonly be found in what areas of Veterinary Clinic?
-Cleaning/Disinfecting Agents
-Parasecticides
-Drugs
-Sterilization Agents
-Radiology Process agents
What is proper storage of Chemicals?
Tight fitting screw on lids. Eye level storage, not above. Proper mixing and dilution. Proper spill clean up.
What is necessary to have in clinic when chemicals are being handled?
Eyewash station and proper protective equipment for clean up.
What are two examples of Zoonotic diseases?
Rabies and Leptospirosis
What are the 4 types of Pathogens?
Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi, and Parasites.
What are two examples of non-zoonotic disease?
Parvovirus and Panluekopenia
How many biosafety levels are there?
4 levels
What is Biosafety level one? Provide an example of what substances would fall under this level.
Level one does not normally cause illness in humans. There are no specific handling or disposal requirements.
Examples: Soaps, Vaccines, etc.
What are biosafety Levels?
Used to identify protective measures required in labs based upon substances and work being conducted.
What is Biosafety level two?
Level two are labs where there is a potential for human disease to occur if things are not handled correctly. There is the potential for mucous membrane exposure, ingestion or puncture. Precautions will vary by agent being worked with.
What is Biosafety level Three?
Level three are labs where there is a potential to cause serious and deadly disease. There is typically a governing body at this level of lab. Often work with highly contagious illness. Require controlled access and decontamination. All staff are required to undergo exposure testing.
