What elements are included in an emergency action plan?
1 Communication equipment
- Location of all equipment/supplies
- local resources - EMS contact info, directions, location of nearest facility, trans. options
- Directions for EMS, DAN phone number
- Method of documentation
What emergency equipment should be readily available as part of an emergency action plan?
O2 kit, first aid kit (resus barrier, exam gloves, cleansing wipes, bandages, sterile gauze/eye pads/tape, scissors)
Transport to a medical facility instead of to a hyperbaric chamber?
Eval must be completed first, and takes time to staff chambers
*Avoid unnecessary delays in care
EAP information to record?
Name, address, age, phone, etc. Chief complaint, signs, symptoms Pertinent medical history Aid rendered Diving info - # days, # dives/day, max depth, SI times, gases used
General considerations for a rescuer when attempting to move an ill or injured person?
- Move orderly/unhurried to avoid injury to self or person
- Rescuer safety comes first
- Alignment of injured person’s body - want spine straight
- Body mechanics - keep back straight, bends from hips, head neutral, lift with legs
When should an ill or injured person be moved?
- Required for CPR

Stop - and think before acting
Assess - the scene before assisting, determine if safe
Find - first aid kit, O2 kit, AED
Exposure - protection from blood and other bodily fluids
Hazards to assess before first aid?
Possible disease transmission - active bleeding, sharp objects
Fire
Animals
Electricity, gas
Traffic
Why is exposure protection critical for rescuers?

Risk of infection to rescuer
Gloves, eye shields, resuscitation masks
What are the steps to the assessment sequence?
Asses for responsiveness, breathing, circulation
Activate EMS
Adjust individuals position for ongoing care
A(lert)-V(erbal)-P(ainful)-U(nresponsive)
How is a pulse located on an adult, a child and an infant?
2 fingers against carotid in neck for 5 - 10 seconds
Same for child
2 fingers against brachial artery in upper arm
What technique assists the rescuer in placing an unresponsive person on his back?
Log-roll - arm above head and arm against torso, support neck/head, roll towards you
What is agonal breathing?
Noisy gasping breaths
When should or shouldn’t the recovery position be used?
Once scene is assessed, if no evidence of injury is present, victim can be replaced in recovery position
