What is defined as children in need?
those who require additional support or services to achieve their full potential
What is defined as child protection?
any activity undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering, or are at risk of suffering significant harm
What is defined as safeguarding children?
measures taken to minimise the risks of harm to children
What is the definition of physical abuse?
actual or attempted physical injury to a child, including the administration of toxic substances, where there is knowledge or reasonable suspicion that the injury was inflicted or knowingly not prevented
What is the definition of emotional abuse?
failure to provide for the childs basic needs such as to have a severe effect on the behaviour and development of the child
What is the definition of neglect?
when a childs essential needs are not met and likely to cause impairment to physical health and development
What is the definition of sexual abuse?
when any person by design or neglect, exploits the child directly or indirectly in any activity intended to lead to sexual arousal or other forms of gratification of any that person or any other persons

What is the definition of dental neglect?
the persistent failure to meet a childs basic oral health needs, likely to result in the serious impairment of a childs oral or general health or development
What are the 3 stages of action where neglect is suspected?
- 1st stage: raise concerns with parents, offer support, set targets, keep records, monitor progress
- 2nd stage: preventive multi-agency response, liase with other health professionals
- 3rd stage: referral to children’s services
For children under 5 who fail apps and have failed to respond to a letter from the dental practice, who must we liase with?
