Safe Handling of your firearm

Safety precaution you should do each time you handle a firearm that has not been in your control or if you are unsure what state the firearm is in

Methodically check the firearm is free from ammunition in the magazine, chamber, action.

Once clear, it is a good idea to insert a chamber safety flag to show it is clear

Load State - when do you use this and what does this mean?

You use this when you have reached your hunting or shooting area.

This usually includes adding ammunition to your empty firearm, generally just into its magazine making sure the chamber stays EMPTY

Action State - what stage is this and when is it safe to do so?

This is when you chamber a round so a cartridge is in the chamber.
You do this when you encounter or seem game. At a shooting range the Range Conducting officer (RCO) will usually direct when and where it is safe to action your firearm

Instant State - what is this and when do you do this?

This is a conscious and deliberate act of moving the safety catch from “safe” to the “fire” position

When you press the the trigger in this state, the firearm WILL fire

Unload - what is it and when do you do this?

The unload procedure is designed to safely remove cartridges from the chamber and magazine of the firearm, and to check and prove that your firearm is completely free from ammunition.

You do this once you have finished firing the firearm
