SACT biology background Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 10 Hallmarks of cancer?
A
- Evading growth supressors
- Avoid immune destruction
- Immortal (don’t age)
- Inflammation promoting tumour growth
- Invasion and metastases
- Angiogenesis
- Genetic instability
- Resisting cell death
- Altering cell metbolism in favour of cell growth
- Persistent growth signals
2
Q
What are the 5 stages of the cell cycle?
A
- G0
- G1
- S
- G2
- M
3
Q
What occurs during G0?
A
The daughter cell rests - function is arrested or cell becomes terminally differentiated
4
Q
What occurs during G1?
A
- Cell grows
- Synthesises proteins needed for replication
- Prepares to divide
5
Q
What occurs during S phase?
A
- Chromasomes replicate forming 2 sister chromatids (DNA doubles)
- Helicase unwinds DNA
- Polymerase binds nucleic acid to the unwound SSDNA to form 2 new dsDNA
6
Q
What occurs during G2?
A
- Replicated DNA is checked for errors
- Cell grows and produces proteins needed to replicate
7
Q
What occurs during M phase?
A
- Mitosis = nucleus divides
- Cytokineses = cell divides
