What is a sacrament
The word sacrament was used to describe the 7 specific rites seen as central to Christian life. Still acknowledged by Catholic Church. Protestants only recognise baptism and the Eucharist. Quakers and Salvation Army don’t recognise any
Baptism
Initiates people into the Christian church. Catholics believe it washes away sin. Some only allow adult baptism rather than infant
Confirmation
Takes place in churches that practice infant baptism when a person reaches an age when they have to commit to church, remaking the promised their parent made once on their behalf
Eucharist
Within worship such as mass worshippers share bread and wine in remembrance of Jesus’ death
Holy orders
The way people join the priesthood of the church. Joining priest is called being ordained
Marriage
The sacrament of marriage shows the spiritual union of the couple and god,
Penance
Confess their sons to a priest and repent them. The priest will free them from their sins and ask them to carry out an act to show sorry e.g. Fasting or prayer
Anointing of the sick
Performed when a catholic is ill or dying. Carried out by a priest who will apply to anoint the sick person
