Sac 4 Flashcards
Definition of hypothermia
A dangerous condition in which the core body temperature drops below 35 degrees
Definition of biodiversity
The number and variety of organisms found with a specified area
Definition of community
A group of interdependent plants and animals inhabiting the same region and interacting with each other.
Factors affecting outdoor environment
Geology~ the scientific study of the origin, history and structure of the earth
Climate~ the prevailing weather conditions of a region
Position and aspect~
Four types of heat loss
Conduction- heat passes out the body directly into a cooler object
Convection- heat rises away from the body into the air
Evaporation- Heat is removed from the body as water or perspiration evaporates and the skin dries.
Radiation- Heat is given off to a cooler environment directly. The amount lost to cold water is 25 times that of cold air.
Layering system
Base layer- should not retain moisture but transport it away from the skin, thereby countering ‘after-exercise chill’.
Insulation layer- retain body heat and the best way to do so is by creating a layer of still or dead air around your body
Outer layer- Protection from wind and outside moisture like rain and snow, Getting rid of body moisture, Protection from chafing, cuts, scrapes, and other outside damage
Recreational uses understandings of the outdoor environment
Recreational participants must understand, plan and prepare for varying conditions carefully. They must be aware of the rapid changes, or unexpected weather conditions, which can interfere with the experience of the outdoor environment
Essential knowledge of specific outdoor environments
- Access and evacuation points are planned.
- facilities available (toilets,shelter)
- access to medical help
