Types of risks
- Absolute risk
- Perceived
- Actual/real risk
Absolute risk
Uppermost limit of risk particular situation or activity, assuming safety has not been considered.
Example: risk associated with rock climbing without safety gear to aid you.
Perceived risk
Subjective assessment that a person makes about the risk they are about to face in some situation.
Actual/real risk
The risk that actually exists for a particular situation or activity, given that safety has been considered and controls are put in place.
Example: risk associated with climbing a rock wall and using safety gear
Types of responses
- Fear
- Curiosity
- Appreciation
- Awe
Fear
Definition: an unpleasant emotion, making someone scared
Example: fear of heights
Potential link to behaviour: may never want to visit this kind of environment.
Curiosity
Definition: behaviours resulting from curiosity may well vary significantly from positive and negative.
Example: is the event or trip planned? Are there risks involved? Do we know what they are.
Potential link to behaviour: doubt, stressed, anxious, increase risk.
Awe
Definition: feeling of admiration
Example: “I am in awe of this place because it is a beautiful place”
Potential link to behaviour: revisit the environment
Appreciation
Definition: a recognition of value and significance in an outdoor environment
Example: “I really appreciate the view from the look out”
Potential link to behaviour: may appreciate more things in life.
As we age
As a person ages, and as their character, personality, experiences and values change, the ways they respond to a particular outdoor environment may change

YOUNG-STRONGER
When you are older you take less risks: knowledge, experience, mature
When you are young you take more risk: feed of adrenaline, peer pressure (push ourselves to explore flow)
Gain maturity, gain experience.
As society changes
Society as a whole changes over time and this can lead to society wide changes in the ways they respond to a particular places.
Government: laws, environmental impacts, regulations.
Influence of media portrayals on personal responses
- To celebrate nature and the outdoors:films/documentary
- To sell a place or experience:advertising/marketing
- To inform: newspaper/ magazines
- To understand and develop our knowledge:informing
- To challenge: film/television
- To scare:films

Risk is the potential to lose something that you value, measured against the possibility of gaining something you value.
