A
- process of increasing/improving knowledge and skills of an employee
- helps them perform more efficiently and effectively

A
- process designed to build up skills
- prepares the employee to take on greater responsibility

Types of training: on-the-job training
A
- takes place in the normal workplace situation
- may consist of a mentor guiding a new staff member or may be more formalised into specific training sessions at the workplace

A
- coaching: mentoring
- demonstration/instruction: shown how to perform a task
- understudy assignment: ‘understudy’ observes another
- job rotation: within or between departments

A
- employee gains experience on equipment they will be working on
- employee can work while being trained - productive
- cost effective way, business isn’t paying for an external outside course provider

- possibility of disrupting operations

A
- requires employees to attend a course or training session at another venue
- normally conducted by experienced trainers

- information presentation style: lectures
- simulations: visual games and case studies
- role plays
- vestibule training: used to training technical staff, allows employees to use their equipment without real work pressures
