Definition of health and wellbeing
overall state of a persons physical, social, emotional, mental wellbeing
definition of illness
a subjective concept related to personal experience of a disease
what is physical H&W
- efficient functioning of the body and its systems
- physical capacity to perform daily activities
- e.g. appropriate rest, healthy blood pressure
what is social H&W
- how individuals interact with others
- e.g. maintain positive and meaningful relationships, good communication skills
what is emotional H&W
- ability to identify and express feelings in a positive way
- e.g. display resilience, positive management and expression of emotions
what is mental H&W
- current state of wellbeing relating to the brain and the mind or brain
- e.g. low levels of stress and anxiety, process info, ability to think, sense of confidence
what is spiritual H&W
- relates to ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise in the minds and conscience
- e.g. hope and peace, sense of meaning and value, sense of belonging
what is meant by the term dynamic?
- constantly changing
- changes can occur quickly in a range of internal and external factors e.g. illness, injury, relationship breakdown
what is meant by the term subjective?
- influenced by or based on personal feelings or opinions
- two people with the same h&w levels may have different perspectives on their overall health
what is an interrelationship?
- way in which two or more things are related to each other
what are WHO prerequisites for health promotion (positive health outcomes)
- basic conditions and resources that need to be available for any gains to be made in h&w
WHO prerequisites for health promotion (positive health outcomes): peace
- absence of violence or conflict
- improved health outcome because improved physical h&w; decreased risk of injury, death, illness
- improved mental h&w; less stress and anxiety
- improved PEMSS overall
WHO prerequisites for health promotion (positive health outcomes): shelter
- provides protection from elements, a place to live
- improved health outcomes because improved physical h&w; less susceptible to illness and injury, basic protection
- improved mental h&w; less anxiety/stress, security
- improved mental, emotional, physical h&w because of promotion of adequate sleep
- improved physical h&w because improved nutrition because access to cooking facilities
WHO prerequisites for health promotion (positive health outcomes): education
- acquisition of knowledge, skills, values and beliefs
- health literacy: capacity to obtain, process, understand basic health information
- improves physical h&w; increases health literacy
- improved mental, social h&w; increases employment opportunities
- improved physical, mental h&w; education increases income earning potential
- mental, emotional h&w; encourages greater involvement in decision making
WHO prerequisites for health promotion (positive health outcomes): food
- when people are able to obtain adequate nutrition, culturally appropriate and safe food regularly through local non-emergency services
- required for efficient functioning of most systems in body
- improves physical h&w; less susceptible to illness and disease
- improves PEMSS; efficient functioning go the body
- improved physical, social, mental h&w; allows individuals to participate in recreational activities
