what are Crompton and Lyonette’s two explanations for the gendered division of labour?
cultural factors such as patriarchal norms and values expects men and women to have different roles which if it wants to change requires changes in attitude
material factors because since women earn less than men it makes more sense for them to stay home
how does Gershuny’s arguement support cultural factors?
argues that couples whose parents had symetrical roles more likely to also have equal roles due to socialisation
how does Sullivan’s arguement support material factors?
there is a direct correlation between how much you work and how much domestic work you do - the more you work the less housework you do

what was Willmott and Young’s study?
they found that the families conjugal roles were becoming less segregated, eventually becoming enturely symmetrical

men only do 8 hours of domestic work a week, 5 hours less than women
how does Oakley criticise W+Y’s study?
she says that men do some housework, but women still experience a dual burden and do far more than men
what was Hardill’s study?
found that men generally made the important decisions - his career came first as that was funding the family
what is the feminist arguement on decision making?
men make the decisions and women are financially dependant on men - their housework is rewarded with money from the man but often has strings attatched.
