family performs 4 functions - stabilisation of the sex drive, economic functions, socialisation and reproduction
what is Parson’s theory on the family? (functionalist)
believes nuclear family is best for society as it can perform all functions - family is like a warm bath.

inheritance allows the rich to pass down property and maintain class inequality

the family is changing as there is no longer a set structure. there are no set roles and we are influenced by choice
PLP perspective on the family
families are no longer defined by blood ties - close friends and pets are now seen as family as fictive kin.
