Positive Politeness Strategies (+ve face)

A

-Intensifiers= ‘bloody,’really’, support +ve face as they seek a connection w. someone.
-Interrogative tags= “isn’t it”, builds rapport and closeness, supports need to feel validated.
-Pragmatic particles= ‘eh’,’innit’, (same as int. tags)
-Dysphemism, Slang and Expletives= builds rapport,solidarity, signals belonging
-Praise,invitations,nicnkames= all build rapport

Negative Politeness Strategies (-ve face)

A

-Hedging= “Could you SORT OF move over”, soften and reduce force.
-Discourse Particles= ‘like’,’you know’ (similar to hedging)
-Indirect speech acts=”its a bit cold in here, would you mind moving that”, declaratives and int. used to substitute commands.
-“Should we hit the road”-(same as indirect speech acts+
-Titles and Honorifics= ‘Mr, Sir”
-Overt politeness markers= ‘Apologies, please, thank you”.
