Conurbations
A collection of urban areas that have grown together to form a continuous large urban area.
Megalopolis
A very large and densely populated urban area made up of a number of smaller cities, often with ore than 10 million people, often in a line, or a very large urban area.
Core
Economic centre within a wider economic system (densley populated, centre of wealth creation, highly-developed, positive net migration, working age people)
Periphery
Economically distant from core, higher brith rates, but also high life expectancy. Less densley populated.
Birth rate
Live births per 1000 of population per year.
Death rate
Number of deaths per 1000 of population per year.
Natural population growth (change)
Difference between birth rate and death rate. If positive, population grows.
Fertility rate
Average number of children born to a female across her lifetime
DTM
Demographic Transition Model - 5 Stages to describe, shows birth rate, death rate and total population.
Dependency ratio
The proportion of people who are dependent (not-working) in relation to 100 working-age people. Think about its weaknesses!
Ageing society
Increase in median age of a population, caused by low fertility rates .
Taxation
Collection of funds for public services that will later be used to pay pensions and retirement.
Retirement age
The age at which people stop working and receive funds from the state or privately.
Push and pull factors
Factors that cause people to leave a location (source country) and draw them to a host country. Comes from the simple model.
Schengen
Treaty which created an area free of internal border checks, important for the four freedoms in the EU.
