What is hypertension
Sustained increase in blood pressure. Above 135/85 mmHg
Why is hypertension described as a silent killer
As anyone can develop hypertension, and is often asymptomatic. Even though it is asymptomatic, it still has damaging effects on heart and vasculature and may lead to heart failure, MI, stroke, renal failure and retinopathy.
What diseases are attributable to hypertension?
Vascular diseases.
Retinopathy, aortic aneurism, left ventricular hypertrophy, myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke, chronic kidney failure,
How is blood pressure regulated?
Mean arterial blood pressure = cardiac output x Heart rate
