S4.6.2 Glossary Flashcards
Alloy
A mixture where at least one of the substances is a metal
Compound
A substance made of more than one type of atom, chemically bonded together
Covalent bond
When non-metal atoms are held together by one or more shared pairs of electrons
Delocalised electron
Electrons which are not held in shells, but are free to move
Dot and cross diagram
A diagram showing the sharing or transfer of electrons
Electron
A subatomic particle with a negative charge and almost no mass
Electrostatic force
The attraction of oppositely charged particles
Element
A substance made of only one type of atom
Empirical formula
The relative numbers of each element in that compound
Giant covalent structure
A substance made of many non-metal atoms covalently bonded together
Intermolecular force
Forces which hold molecules together
Intramolecular force
Forces which hold atoms together, within molecules
Ionic bond
The electrostatic attraction which keeps positive metal ions and negative non-metal ions together
Ionic lattice
The arrangement of alternating positive and negative ions in a solid
Ions
Charged particles
Malleable
Capable of being hammered or pressed into a new shape
Metallic bond
The electrostatic attraction which keeps positive metal ions and negative delocalised electrons together
Molecule
Two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds
Monomer
A molecule which can join together to form long chains
Polymer
A large molecule made of repeating monomers
