What is the vulva?
The vulva is the external genital organs of the female, it
- acts as a sensory tissue during sexual intercourse
- Defends the internal female reproductive tract from infection
- To assist in the flow of urine
What is the role of bartholins glands?
These glands secrete lubricating mucus from small ducts during sexual arousing?
What is located in front/behind the vagina?
In front= the bladder
Behind= the rectum
What are the layers of the vagina?
1) stratified squamous epithelium (provides protection/lucbricated by cervical mucus)
2) Elastic Lamina propria
3) Fibromuscular layer- an inner circular and outer longitudinal layer
4) Adventist’s
What is the arterial supply/venous drainage/lymphatic drainage of the vagina?
Arterial supply= Internal iliac artery
Venous drainage= Internal iliac vein
Lymphatic drainage= iliac and superficial inguinal lymph nodes
What is the importance of lactobacilli?
It contains lactobacilli as part of its flora to regulate pH and keep the environment acidic to prevent infections such as thrush.
What is the cervix lined with?
Simple columnar epithelium which produces cervical mucus.
What is the hole which is visible on cervix examination?
External os (opening of the cervix into the vagina)
What should the angle between the cervix and the vagina be?
ANTEVERSION
What should the angle between the cervix and uterus be?
ANTEFLEXION
What is the role of the cervix?
Facilitates the passage of the sperm into the uterine cavity
It maintains the sterility of upper reproductive tract
What are the 3 parts of the uterus called?
Fundus= top Body= site of implantation to blastocyst Cervix= Lower part which links it to the vagina
What ligaments are found in the uterus?
The round ligament, broad ligament, ligament of the ovary (continuous with the round ligament).
