S2 Flashcards
What are the seven different layers responsible for specific data exchange functions in the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model?
Physical (Layer 1)
Data Link (Layer 2)
Network (Layer 3)
Transport (Layer 4)
Session (Layer 5)
Presentation (Layer 6)
Application (Layer 7)
Modems
Modems connect a network to an ISP’s network, usually through a cable connection
Routers
Routers manage network traffic by connecting devices to form a network. They read the source and destination fields in information packet headers to determine the most efficient path through the network for the packet to travel
Switches
Switches are similar to routers in that they connect and divide devices within a computer network
Gateways
A gateway is a computer or device that acts as an intermediary between different networks
Edge-Enabled Devices
Allow computing, storage and networking functions closer to the devices where the data or system request originates, rather than a distant central location
Servers
Servers are physical or virtual machines that coordinate the computers, programs and data that are part of the network
Firewalls
Firewalls are software applications or hardware devices that protect a person’s or a company’s network traffic by filtering it through security protocols with predefined rules
SELECT *
select all attributes from the set of data
Four Benefits of Relational Databases
Completeness (This concept means that relational databases assist with the goal that all data required for a business process are included in the data set), no redundancy, business rules enforcement, and communication and integration of business processes
Inner Join
uses only the records that both data sets have in common.
Operational Data Store
An ODS is a repository of transitional data from multiple sources and is often an interim area between data sources and data warehouses
Data Warehouse
Are very large data repositories that are centralized and used for reporting and analysis rather than for transaction purposes
Data Mart
A data mart is much like a data warehouse but is more focused on a specific purpose such as marketing or logistics and is often a subset of a data warehouse
Data Lake
A repository similar to a data warehouse, but it contains both structured and unstructured data, with data mostly being in its natural or raw format
